Lee Jong Suk “Variety” Singapore Fan Meet -12 Nov 2016

Given the theme of the fan meet as “variety”, I was expecting it be more fun and engaging. However, to my dismay, the fan meet was overall a little dry and not so interesting.

It was a pretty short 1.5 hour fan meet but his fans were excited and happy to see him.

It was my first time meeting him in real life as well. By far, he’s probably the fairest actor I have ever met in real life. His complexion is as smooth as bean curd and he typically just glows.

Before the fan meet, I thought that Lee Jong Suk would be a sunshine, cheeky young lad, who may love to joke around like many of his peers.

However, it turned out that he is pretty quiet and shy. He is a man of few words and he would usually give you politically correct answers. That made the Q&A segment pretty boring (sad to say), especially when the questions asked by the host were pretty much those that we may be able to search for online.

He’s probably more 闷骚, I would say. You need to make a lot of effort to hit the right points to get him talking.

The questions mainly revolved around the filming of his latest drama “W – Two Worlds”, his character as Kang Chul, how he maintained his physique and abs, and what he enjoys doing during his leisure time.

He is someone who likes to hit the gym but not staying out in the sun as he perspires easily. The shooting for W – Two Worlds was during summer and it was an unforgettable and horrifying experience for him. That also explains why he is as white as milk.

It was his first visit to Sunny Island and he wanted to squeeze in a day or two so that he could tour around. However, due to his hectic schedule, the best he could do was to try our famous chilli crab. That turned out to be his favourite Singapore dish.

He shared some personal selfies and also some with his pet dog. However, there wasn’t much about his personal likes and dislikes, hobbies or about his family and friends.

Well, that’s just so much that we know about him through the Q&A, nothing really in depth.

There wasn’t very much chemistry between the host, the artiste and the translator. It was pretty much more of a “formal” setting.

I guess the host plays a very important role in such events. It indeed is a challenge to get a man of few words to start talking. Probably they could have researched a little more on his likes and dislikes and try to make him open up a little more based on topics of his interests. If more entertaining or engaging questions were asked, it probably would get the not so chatty guy to share more about him. Maybe more scenario questions could have been asked.

Lee Jong Suk usually just chuckles or “parrots” the English words that the host used. Most importantly, I think she asked too formal questions or questions that didn’t really spike much public interest for us.

At the end of it all, I don’t think I know much more about him than what I can find online.

Despite his shy personality, he does have a very contagious and hearty laughter. His fans just loved watching him do AEGYO stuff as well.

There were some games for the lucky fans and fan service included back hugs or singing to the lucky one to serenade her. He prepared a very big box of gifts for the lucky fan, but no one would know what it is except for the lady herself.

The actor knew that singing is not his forte and had forewarned the audience before he started singing. Nonetheless, he still tried to pull through 4 songs which included “Eat”, “Kiss Me”.

Erm well, I guess he should concentrate on honing his acting skills since he is supposed to take on a villain role in his next movie.

This would be something that we are all looking forward to see how he can take on that challenge. It may pave his career to greater heights if he succeeds.

After the actor bade his farewell and gestured a big “saranghae”, the fan meet came to an end with the actor and lucky fans getting ready for the group photo opportunity.

Maybe I was spoiled by the previous fan meets that I had been to, or rather I think the organiser can really do much better.

How should I put it?

It felt very different from Kim Soo Hyun & So Ji Sub’s fan meets. Those were so very engaging, entertaining & you felt so much sincerity from them, even if you attend it as a non-fan.

Well, despite the fact that it wasn’t as fun as we had hoped, the audience had plenty of time and chances to take nice pictures of the actor.

So I guess that’s the biggest takeaway from the fan meet.
